Eftichios S. Sartzetakis is a Professor of Environmental Economics at the Department of Economics, University of Macedonia. He has also taught at Aegean University, Carleton University, Université Laval, University of British Columbia and Thompson Rivers University.
His research focuses on environmental economics and management. He has published a number of papers in leading academic journals, including: Economic Theory, Journal of Public Economic Theory, International Journal of Industrial Organization, Environmental and Resource Economics and Journal of Regulatory Economics. He has served as member of the Editorial Board of the journal “Environment and Development Economics”, and he is member of international academic organisations. He has organized international academic conferences and participated presenting his work in over a hundred international conferences. He has delivered invited seminars at a number of Universities, including, University of British Columbia, Concordia University, University of Calgary, Universidad Carlos III, Wageninegn Agricultural University, and Université Catholique de Louvain. He is leading a number of research projects on environmental economics and management, among which the Environmental Management System of the University of Macedonia which is certified by EMAS. He served as Lead Author in a number of committees and international projects, such as the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, and national projects such as the Bank of Greece’s Study Group for the Impact of Climate Change. He served as expert advisor to private firms and public authorities both in Canada and in Greece, including the Bureau of Competition Policy, Industry Science and Technology, Government of Canada, the Ontario Natural Gas Association, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Energy, Climate Change and Environment, Government of Greece.
He has served as member in various organizations and committees including the Governing Body of the Greek National Green Fund (2011-2012), the Governing Body of the National Center for the Environment and Sustainable Development (2010- 2013) and the Greek National Committee for Adaptation to Climate Change (2017-2019) and he is currently member of the scientific advisory board for WWF Greece’s proposal for a climate law.
He has served in a number of academic administrative positions, including Vice Rector Research at the University of Macedonia (2014-18), Vice-Chairperson of the Department of Economics (2010-13) and Chairperson of the Department of Economics and Finance, Thompson Rivers University (1997-2000), Director of the University’s Research Unit at University of Macedonia (2010-2020) and Director of the M.A. in Economics at University of Macedonia (2009-2020). He is the founding Director of the MSc in Law and Economics (a collaboration between the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki’s Law School and the University of Macedonia’s Department of Economics) and of the MSc in Sustainable Development at the International Hellenic University.
